MYANMAR:

Lift restrictions immediately on humanitarian aid

The Myanmar government must urgently lift restrictions that are preventing access to humanitarian aid in Rakhine and Kachin states, Amnesty International said today.

The intensification of the conflict in Kachin State, and the eruption of violence in northern Rakhine State, where a major security operation has led members of the Rohingya and Rakhine communities to flee their homes, has aggravated what was already a serious humanitarian situation in the country. Please open the site and register your protest. A tweet link is provided at the end of the post. You may also post on Facebook and with your email contacts.

CHARITY CORNER

Young lives that you can help save
This week we call your attention to the Schistosomiasis Control Initiative (SCI) charity. Schistosomiasis is a parasitic worm that affects 200 million people worldwide. Of those people, 45 million are women who live with female genital schistosomiasis (FGS), a painful and life-threatening consequence of the parasitic infection. FGS causes genital bleeding, infertility, and increases the chance that a woman will contract a sexually transmitted disease infection.  (SCI)combines  world-class research, national government partnerships, and effective implementation to dispense cost-effective deworming treatments through local school programs. Parasitic infections have life-threatening effects--and can often be fatal in children under five years of age. SCI’s deworming pills cost an average of 73 cents per child treated, and work to prevent parasitic worm infections. The charity operates in 15 countries across sub-Saharan Africa, providing schoolchildren effective and sustainable access to treatments for schistosomiasis (water-born snails) and intestinal worms (hookworm, whipworm, and roundworm). SCI projects to deliver a total of 325 million treatments by 2019. It is recommended by Givewell

USA

Report on torture ignored

This American Torture Story has been buried for far too long.

The CIA never intended for the public to learn it had "disappeared" more than 100 men between 2002 and 2008. And if it weren't for a new Senate report on torture, we wouldn't know some of the gruesome details: That the CIA used forced rectal feeding and 'hydration' to exert control over men; or that it literally left one man chained to a wall, forced to stand for 17 days straight.  Please click and send your protest to the Justice Department
